CMNS in a nutshell

The Consorzio Mario Negri Sud (CMNS) is a non-profit organization for biomedical and pharmacological research.

It was founded in 1987 as a consortium between the Mario Negri Institute in Milan and the Chieti Province authority, later joined by the Abruzzo Region authority.

The scientific activities operatively began on February 1st 1988.

The CMNS campus is located in Santa Maria Imbaro (Chieti) and is composed of nine buildings that cover an area of approximately 20,000 m2.

Research programmes

CMNS has given a significant contribution to the advancement of research aimed at the prevention and cure of human diseases.

Research at the CMNS covers four main areas of interest:

  • Fundamental and translational research: understanding the molecular and cellular basis of cancer, cardiovascular and genetic diseases for the development of innovative therapies
  • Clinical pharmacology and epidemiology: as applied to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and oncology, cognitive and behavioural disturbances of old age, health services, and care of patients.
  • Environmental sciences: analytical methodologies and services for comprehensive environmental monitoring, and to preserving the quality of air, water and soil, and the agro-food products.
  • Citizenship and welfare: research and debate for a greater understanding of the manifold connections between notions of citizenship, processes of identity formation and practices of governance in the contemporary world.
FUNDING

The CMNS is not directly supported by national or local government agencies nor by other public bodies. Structural and research costs are in fact covered by competitive funding, for instance from national charities such as AIRC and the Telethon Foundation and by international funding agencies such as the European Union, the US National Institute of Health, the European Molecular Biology Foundation (EMBO), The American Heart Association, etc.
